I’ve always loved the Alfred Angelo line for its beautiful styles and affordable prices. Whether romantic, classic, trendy or sassy, I truly believe this line has something that would make just about any bride happy.

As you know, Alfred Angelo came to the rescue at the last minute when I was on the fence about my original dress, and I quickly fell head over heels for a romantic mermaid silhouette with cascading tiers of lace, a gorgeous semi-cathedral train, and an elegant grape sash beneath the bust.

And earlier, while on the hunt for bridesmaid dresses that would flatter a variety of body types, my sister and I found the perfect formal and flattering grape gown, which featured white embroidery and crystal detailing on its sash.

 An Alfred Angelo Wedding
Of course, I was excited about these picks before the big day, but looking back at our photos afterward, I’m even more in love. In the end, I’m so glad I ordered my dream dress before it was too late, and that the girls also loved their dresses, which paired so perfectly with mine. I truly can’t imagine our wearing anything else.

Will you and your bridesmaids wear dresses made by the same designer, or closely matched in style? Whether you’re now looking back on your day or are still waiting for it to arrive, have you ever had any second thoughts about your dress choices?

Born to be Mrs. Beever

This is an image of the dress I originally wanted my bridesmaids to wear (and in this color, too):

Isn’t the back adorable?  It’s a Dessy (After Six) dress (from their web site).
After+Six+6554+(3) Wed Recap: Let them wear what they want!

When I took my six bridesmaids with me to a shop to try it on, I was so excited to see them all fall in love with it.  Perfect for our spring April wedding and to match our turquoise/aqua color.  Unfortunately, they all HATED it!  I mean, not just, “Uh, we’re not thrilled about it.”  But rather, it is totally unflattering…the bust is horrible…I hate the color…please don’t make us wear this, hated it!

I was so bummed.  But I wasn’t going to let the attire issue come between me and my girlfriends and relatives.  Then they started going on about how they didn’t like the blue colored dress and wanted to go with red instead (the other color of our wedding).  They said they would more likely wear red again and it would be flattering on all skin tones.  I was really bummed out about this because the blue was what I wanted to go with my color scheme!  The red was only the accent color.  So I asked them to show me some options of what they liked.  They came up with two choices:

Our wedding rehearsal was very stressful because we were only given exactly one-hour for the venue.  I don’t care what no one says, you definitely need more than an hour for a wedding rehearsal.  The whole time I’m directing the wedding party, one of the owners at the venue, constantly kept alerting me of the time. So of course this was adding more pressure, but I remained calm. Why, b/c during the rehearsal I had to where my professional wedding planner hat. So I had to get things in gear.

**It so much easier/simpler to plan for another person’s wedding or event. It’s funny how that works.**

The night started out kind of good at the rehearsal until I realized the wrong version of music was playing for my wedding party entrance.  So I had to have a quick talk with the guy.

The Issue: I never had my consultation meeting with him; I booked it with his partner. We booked this company because of the other guy’s ties to my husband. At our meeting we discuss all songs; I even detailed them all via print-out. Having the correct version was pertinent to the ceremony because of specific verses that tie into what would be going on during the entrances. So he said he’ll check out some other versions to find the one I asked for. So of course I was hoping for the best during the actual wedding.

**SN: Again, due to time constraint we didn’t have time to stop and search for the correct song.

Next issue: My sister (Matron of Honor).  I also had a Maid of Honor (who I have blogged about several time). Well my sister got very upset when she realized she wouldn’t be standing next to me during the ceremony.  She immediately displayed an attitude. At first I didn’t realize it.  Upon finishing up, she approaches me with an attitude and tells me the Matron is supposed to stand beside the bride and that my Mistress of Ceremony (has directed many weddings) said the same thing.

Well I didn’t receive that well. For me, giving me attitude at rehearsal wasn’t the time or place for it.  My focus was #1 remain calm that night, enjoy the night and get through this rehearsal on time.  Unbeknownst to me while standing on stage, she grumbled a bit about it, so the Maid of Honor offered to switch positions with her, if it was big deal.

My Verdict: The standing position will remain the same. Why, because that’s how it is suppose to go and because as the bride that’s what I wanted. At the end of the day, that the only rule that matters. In her head, she just assumed I preferred my Maid beside instead of her and that couldn’t be furthest from the truth.  I had everyone position that way because that’s the order I knew and preferred.  Who the actual people were didn’t matter.

I said NO, you will not make this day or this weekend about you.

Needless to say, she commences to have a sour attitude for the rest of the night carrying into dinner.

Rehearsal Dinner

We had our rehearsal dinner at Champps American Restaurant.   I was able to get their manager to agree to create a special menu for our group in order to stay under specific price ceiling.  So they had special typed menus for us with our wedding party name on them and everything.  That was great.  This particular Champps restaurant also has Karaoke night on Friday nights so we had a pretty live and exciting time that night.  With NO Time Contraints!!

The morning of our wedding started off quietly and slowly, with my mom, sister and I heading to one of my bridesmaids’ homes to start getting all dolled up for the special moments to come.

As we entered the quiet house along with our hair and makeup stylists, I relished the serenity of the day, but felt eager for the hustle and bustle I knew would soon follow. After all, this was my wedding day, and every moment was supposed to feel action-packed and fun, right?

Getting Ready: The Calm Before The Storm
But since a few bridesmaids had gone to a separate salon, things remained calm and relatively peaceful for quite a while. My mom made a Starbucks run, as stylist Jana and her daughter worked away. Stephen’s sisters joined us, patiently awaiting their turns in the makeup chair. My phone on my lap, I found time to blog and send off a few fun “wedding day” messages.

But sure enough, as the morning wore on, the house started to fill up, both with people and things. My future mother-in-law brought us lunch, leftover from our rehearsal dinner the night before. Future father-in-law? He also stopped by, kindly heading to Jamba Juice to grab our favorites. The rest of the girls arrived, and there was excited chatter, plus hugs all around.

Getting Ready: The Calm Before The Storm
As the kitchen table became strewn with plates, boxes of crackers, and empty plastic cups, one or two of the girls’ boyfriends even popped in and out of the picture, while photographer Damien steadily snapped away, alongside his assistant Nicole. Photo equipment filled the living room, as my gown hung happily in the window, where it could finally have its day in the sun.

Things were calm yet crazy, and quiet yet joyously loud. It was the perfect combination.

heather 1 Getting Ready: The Calm Before The Storm

LESSON LEARNED: Before your wedding day, think about exactly what type of “getting ready” experience you’d like, as this can set the tone for how you feel going into the entire day – nervous, excited, calm, and so on. Do you envision a boisterous morning to get you pumped up? A calm, relaxing moment shared with just your sister and mom? A mix of both, like me? Let your personality be your guide. Plus, when choosing a location, be sure to pick a spot that is large enough to comfortably accommodate however many people will be there. A place that will lend a great backdrop for photos doesn’t hurt, either.

Where do you or did you plan to get ready on your wedding day? Do you prefer to be surrounded by a large group, or to keep things small?

Born to be Mrs. Beever

I totally realized that I hadn’t scheduled a post about my team of wonderful ladies who helped beautify and dress me on the day of the wedding.  I can’t believe I forgot this normal recap because even though I was irritated by all the photos our photographer didn’t get, the ‘getting ready’ shots are truly some of the most beautiful and my favorite shots of the day.  But before you check out the photos, here’s a couple minutes of several pieced together videos of my friends and family getting me dressed :)

This is Natalie Buketov.  Natalie did my hair and makeup as well as hair and makeup for four of my bridemaids and my mom.  She showed up at 7:30 in the morning and left just after our first look when we were about to start pictures which was probably at about 2 pm.  My girls looked GORGEOUS!
Yes, I have false eyelashes on here for sure

Cropped with bridesmaids

Denise and her lovely bridesmaids

Chances are that like me, your friends are spread all around the globe and time will come when you’re asked to serve as a bridesmaid for a friend who lives in a completely different city or country to you.

Unlike being a regular, local bridesmaid, being an out of town bridesmaid (OOTBM) is a little different. I’ve served twice as an OOTBM, once back home in Australia when I was living in London, and once this past weekend in New York.

There are some great advantages to being an OOTBM. You usually have no complicated jobs to do, because everything has been done before you arrived. You just have to turn up, put on a pretty dress and smile for the photos.

You feel slightly like a celebrity guest, flown in specially to celebrate with the happy couple. Everyone wants to ask you where you’re from and everyone’s impressed that you travelled so far away (even if you came in from a couple of hours away).

However, there are downsides to being an OOTBM. You generally miss out on all the fun, pre-wedding festivities like the bridal shower, hen party and of course trying on gowns with the bride. You can’t influence the colour scheme, decor or even the style of the bridesmaid’s dresses. You better hope that the local bridesmaids have good taste!

The other bridesmaids might resent you swanning in at the last minute and taking it easy, so they might give you the bad jobs by default, like manning the guest book or entertaining the kids. Win them over by pitching in to help wherever possible. You may not be a local, but you can fold programmes, fetch and carry and generally be a helpful presence.

Now’s not the time to be a leader, or give your opinion on the table setting that was decided months ago. Your job is to compliment everything and everyone – regardless of what you think.

So your bridal shoes are the wrong size or you got the short straw and get the geeky groomsmen to walk you down the aisle. You weren’t there to choose, you get what you’re given and you’ll smile. You’re there for your friend after all.

One consolation though. You’ve known the bride for years, maybe you’re childhood friends and you’ve got secrets on her that nobody else knows. That kind of friendship lasts a long longer than a wedding weekend. You may be an OOTBM, but if you’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid at all, then you’re a lifelong friend.

I’ve been lucky in my experiences as an OOTBM, with wonderful brides but what about you?

Fall wedding decor ideasFall is a very popular time for weddings. primarily because of the weather and that nature masterfully weaves its color palette into stunning displays of oranges, yellows, reds and browns. It’s natures best color coordinated season of the year. Brides simply love this season and here are some great ideas to accentuate your fall wedding planning.

1) Location
Make sure that wherever you host your wedding, that it’s somewhere that is accented by the natural beauty of the season. A quiet Victorian style church surrounded by trees in their fall colors makes for some incredibly brilliant wedding photo opportunities. Mountain settings are simply stunning if you can get your location reserved before that other bride does!

Leaf Save The Dates For Fall Weddings2) Set the Tone
It’s good to plan ahead and make your guests aware of your fall themed wedding in advance. This may help to steer them in their choice of fashion accessories such as maple leaf broaches or autumn color handkerchiefs. Set the pace by sending our leaf save the date cards or wedding invitations with a fall or autumn feel to them. There are tons of wedding invitations places online including Get Married’s shop which carries some nice unique wedding invitations that you won’t find anywhere else.

Maple Leaf Place Card Holders3) Fall decorations
It’s also important to make sure that your guests can enjoy the seasonal colors whether they are inside or out by decorating the tables with centerpieces that use colorful leaves, straw, dried flowers, and pumpkin colors. Keeping within the brown and yellow spectrum of colors will be eye catching. Small details like using a Leaf Guestbook or maple leaf place card holders make very dramatic statements. Handmade tablecloths and doilies also give a small town feel that adds a nice touch.

Maple Leaf Bottle Stopper for Fall Weddings4) Fall wedding favors
Give your guests fall wedding favors that will help them to remember the occasion. They may not remember details, but when they get to take home fall themed wedding favors like copper leaf bottle stoppers, place card holders, or simply any of the many ideas that are available out there, you give them a point of reference to remember the occasion. If leaves or pumpkin type gifts aren’t your style, at least try and manage to stick to your color palette.

5) Dress Color
In some people’s eyes, the only potential downside to a fall wedding is the dress color. An off white wedding dress is normally a safer bet with fall weddings. primarily because a bright white dress can clash with your fall motif. Be sure to stick to the color coordination since you are the focal point of the day. If you’ve inherited a white dress or refuse to walk down the aisle in anything but white, it won’t ruin the day, but it’s that attention to detail that will set the bar. Also ensure that the wedding party and especially bridesmaid dresses will help to support your color choices.

Pumpkin Pie Recipe6) Food
Your fall wedding menu should highlight food of the autumn season with selections like pumpkin pie, pecan pie, squash, zucchini, and apple cider with cinnamon sticks. Don’t forget your vegetarian guests as well. Likewise your wedding cake should also have fall colors and decorations incorporated into layers or decorations. Placing the cake on a light brown or dust yellow tablecloth surrounded by leafs would be a great eye catcher.

7) Everyone knows
Out of all of the great fall wedding tips that are available out there, be sure that you keep the color coordination on the top of everyone’s mind. Let your wedding planner know your plans so that they can inform all of the right people and monitor the situation for you. The caterer needs to know that you want your menu seasonal so that they can plan accordingly. It’s just very important that everyone is aware of your autumn motif to make sure that they don’t add something to the mix to clash with your flow and feel of fall.

Image from Google Images and approved for re-use 8) Lighting
Make sure that whoever is in charge of decorating, that they keep the lighting subdued and not bright white. All of your colors can get washed away in bright white light. Keep lighting off-white or yellow to keep the ambiance flowing even in the air. If the DJ will be supplying lighting as well, be sure that they know of your color plans so that their “disco lights” don’t ruin everything you worked so hard to create. But more importantly, be sure to let your wedding photographer know about the yellow lighting since yellow plays havoc on white balance. It’s best they know as far in advance as possible.

On June 12, 2010 a beautiful day was created for me by two of my bridesmaids and a wedding hostess. I now refer to these ladies as my “Shining Stars”. Remember these are the ladies who stepped up and were there for me when my MOH dropped the ball and said she wouldn’t do it.
**SN: MOH drama mentioned in previous post**

My shower took place at my neighborhood’s community center. We had a shower group of about 25 people. We had a wonderful spread of food, fun games, prizes, and a great time just fellowshipping. A few of my friends that showed up, I hadn’t seen a long time, so that was great.

They stayed within my wedding colors theme of, green, brown and orange. They had fudge lollipops in the shape of a rose as favors for everyone on the tables.

My bridal shower hostesses for the event created a bridal shower agenda for the day:
~Welcome
~Don’t Say or Do Bridal Shower Game
……everyone given a clothes pin and told what words are forbidden, if you say them someone can take your pin. Person with most pins by end of day wins a prize
~Bridal Word Scramble
~Purse Game
……I requested this game, b/c it’s so fun. A list is given to players with items found in purse with points for them. The person with most points win prize. The things people have in their purse are hilarious. We had ladies cleaning their purse. They got very serious!!
~Blessing of the Food
~How Well Do You Know the Bride?…..
Questions were given to me to answer before event.
~Wedding Dress Game….interactive game. Have everyone break off into groups. Have one model, the rest are designers and they create a wedding dress for you out of toilet paper. Always fun. I got to pick the winning dress.
~The Cutting of the Cake
~Gifts
