The beach at Beau Rivage, Mauritius

In Mauritius we had another very moving wedding vow renewal under the gazebo at Beau Rivage, with a wonderfully funny officiant who tried to make us promise him to come back next year with a baby. Um, can’t make that promise yet unfortunately!

Someone asked us if we’re getting sick of all the vow renewals. To be honest, some are very quick and business like – we’re trying to beat a very big record, so some of the 90-odd renewals won’t be terribly romantic.

But yesterday’s ceremony was very sweet and I actually had tears in my eyes. Maybe it was the magical setting, the fish swimming around us, the hibiscus flowers and the ocean breeze. The officiant spoke movingly about marriage, the ups and downs and reminded us about our original vows.

We had our wedding dinner on our private terrace, and came back to our bedroom with rose petals strewn around the bed in heart shapes. They know exactly what to do here to make romance happen (copious amounts of champagne!).

Today we had breakfast on the terrace (more champagne), a private cooking lesson in Indochine, one of the resort’s restaurants, and then went snorkelling under a perfect azure sky.

Promises aside, I know we’d really love to come back to Mauritius. Both resorts were incredible, and the staff at Legends and Beau Rivage have been extremely welcoming, polite and helpful. A honeymoon here truly would be unforgettable, sexy, relaxing and romantic.

Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible. The team at Naiade Luxury Resorts, Kenya Airways and of course Runaway Bride and Groom.

Watch this video of the brilliant time we had at Beau Rivage and our vow renewal.

As we contemplate the prospect of spending the next six months testing hammocks, sipping champagne and critiquing luxury hotels, Mark is faced with the million dollar question…

Is it acceptable to watch the FIFA World Cup on your honeymoon?

Planning your wedding is an exhausting, exhilarating and amazing experience.  As a couple you will enjoy highs, lows and set-backs culminating in the best day of your lives.

J0422806

At the same time, for any sports fan, particularly any football fan, every four years an event of similar drama, excitement and romance takes place. If you are fortunate enough to be getting married in the next few weeks and your honeymoon falls in the period of June 11th to July 11th then there is a strong chance that FIFA World Cup matches will be taking place during your dream honeymoon.

Unless handled in a delicate manner this challenge alone could cause arguments, wedding cancellations, ruined honeymoons, divorce or even death (well, maybe not death but we guess your new wife could quickly abstain from normal honeymoon and newlywed activities!)

Mark works in the sports industry and has tried and failed to use the ‘I need to watch this football for work’ excuse many times but as a passionate football fan and Manchester United supporter he was successful in incorporating football into our own honeymoon, so learn from the Master.

Here are some potential tactics to breach the World Cup issue with your lovely wife-to-be:

1.  Grab the nettle – Face up to the issue, be brave, talk to your wife before the trip, negotiate being able to watch from the knock-out stages onwards and promise to only watch the important games. A bribe or promise of a treat on the trip may ease discussions.

2.  On the sly – Sunbathe near the bar, ask the waiter for score updates, regular bathroom trips. Proceed with caution, getting caught watching a game behind wifey’s back could have scary consequences.

3.  ‘Stumble’ across a pub showing the game – Perfect Planning Prevents Poor Performance – know your team’s schedule, accidentally arrange drinks in a pub that you know will be showing the game.

4.  The shopping trip – Either ask your bride for some alone time while you go and find her the perfect honeymoon gift and combine shopping with watching a match. Alternatively give your bride a big shopping budget and send her off while you ‘rest’ at the hotel.

5.  Go where the action is – If you are feeling brave, consider a honeymoon in South Africa. The whole country will be wrapped up in WC fever and the matches and atmosphere will be unavoidable.

J0422476 6.  Concede defeat – Let your wife know that the WC is on and that to demonstrate your commitment to your marriage you are choosing not to watch the matches. This will either will a sympathy vote where she let’s you watch the big games or will win you a pile of brownie points to be cashed in at different points through your married life – for example – ‘I didn’t watch England win the World Cup on our honeymoon, I made that sacrifice for our love, so I should be able to choose the name of our first child and I would like to call him Wayne (as in Wayne Rooney)’.

To all soon to be married football fans out there, good luck…and don’t give up!

You don’t have to compromise on quality when you buy wedding dresses online; the price savings are due to lower overheads.

A bride asked me recently what the catch was with buying discounted wedding gowns online. “It all sounds too good to be true” were her words. At first I was surprised that she thought there was a catch then I realized that having been in the business for years I was taking my own knowledge for granted. Once I explained the pricing process she gave me a rye smile and said “So I really can get a bargain online without compromising on quality”. Yes, Yes.

Talking to her reminded me that buying a wedding dress is, for most brides, a new experience and maybe there are many more brides who just needed to be given a little insider knowledge to realise the fantastic price savings they can make online. Here is a general overview of how the High Street puts a price their gowns.

The manufacturer produces the dresses usually in a country where labour costs are relatively low; China, India etc. They sell the wedding dresses to wholesalers in the USA Europe or Australia who then put their label on the dresses. Each Label wholesaler, you know the names, then hike the price and distribute the gowns to their preferred high street outlets with recommended retail price guidelines. They do not want to create competition between their outlets so price cutting is frond upon.

The high street now marks up the price to the recommended retail price to cover their costs and make a profit. There is nothing wrong with any of that; it’s the way business works. So how come online retailers can discount their wedding gowns so much?

There are two areas where online distributors can make you huge savings. First they can cut out the middleman and buy directly from the manufacturer; the down side to this is that you don’t get a label to boast about. The second saving comes from the fact that online overheads are very low compared to running and staffing a high street store. There is a third and not quite so obvious saving which is made from transport and handling costs. Online wedding dresses may only be transported once from the manufacturer directly to your door whereas a High Street dress is handled two or three times before you receive it. Naturally you can still buy designer labels online but the price will still reflect their higher over heads.

More and more brides are choosing to accent their flower girls’ wedding-day attire with the addition of fairy wings.  In times long gone by, flower girls preceded the wedding couple up the aisle, strewing the walk with grains for good luck, fertility, and prosperity. Today, the feel of the flower girl’s duties is much the same. There is a universal “awww,” that emerges from the bridal guests when the flower girl enters a wedding.

Most brides choose a dress for their flower girl that is either A) a miniature version of their own or B) modeled after the bridal party, theme or color scheme. This makes the flower girl unique and beautiful (but not more beautiful than the bride!).  So, playing up her youthful, girly role can be super fun.

Why not spice up this tradition with a trendy alternative? Fairy wings can enhance the mood of your wedding, adding an air of wispy-ness. Fairy wings at a wedding suggest a whimsical and fairy-tale feel to the occasion, and can make your wedding even more romantic.

Fairy wings are easily obtained for your flower girls both online and in stores. In addition, they can be easily made by the DIY bride. A pair of wire hangers and some tulle add up to a mystical little flower girl.

For those questioning the emerging tradition, garbing your flower girl with wings can add to her enjoyment of the day. After all, what little girl hasn’t dreamed of being a fairy princess? Your guests, also, are not likely to forget how fabulous you looked, with little fairies flying around on your wedding day!

My biological father and I have not had the best relationship. He left when I was 3 years old and told my mother after she was married “that he didn’t want to be around…raise her yourselves, I don’t want to be in the picture”. So of course during the years, he has been in and and out of my life and with false promises, lies, and bad advice. He is not too fond of me getting married, but knows that he can not change that. I’ve been struggling to put him on the guest list for the simple fact that he will not know the majority of the guests at the wedding, my step-father who has raised me as his own since I was 3 will be walking me down the aisle, and my side of the family really doesn’t care for him that much. Do I invite him and hope that he just doesn’t show and just not bother inviting him at all?? How would you deal with this??????????

The search continues for the perfect ring! I’ve now given him a direction and the ball is in his court. While DJing hundreds of weddings, he’s seen and heard it all so I’m very interested to see what he comes up with as far as a proposal and final ring.

I swear overall, he was more picky than me! As he so eloquently stated, “this kind of purchase is going to be the s@%*t! When I do something like this, it is going to be done right.” I say, more power to him.

One thing I did notice over time at the jewelers…they are NOT very man friendly. If I could transform the perfect jeweler. It would look more like a high end cigar bar. This is the type of treatment and atmosphere a man needs to make this type of decision. Not to mention, to drop this kind of money. It would be so easy to execute and I guarantee easy to market.

Think overall experience for the man. He needs some guidance, relaxation, and of course pampering!

Beyond this, I’ve been focusing on the long term needs of wedding planning. Which aspects have the longest lead time? I’ve focused on location, location, location. What are the top wedding venues that you need to book well in advance and where have you experienced the best weddings? I can’t wait to read your responses. But for now I’ll sit in amazement at how many brides are calling to book their DJ 2 weeks in advance! How do they do it!?!

Cheers!
