I’ve always loved the Alfred Angelo line for its beautiful styles and affordable prices. Whether romantic, classic, trendy or sassy, I truly believe this line has something that would make just about any bride happy.

As you know, Alfred Angelo came to the rescue at the last minute when I was on the fence about my original dress, and I quickly fell head over heels for a romantic mermaid silhouette with cascading tiers of lace, a gorgeous semi-cathedral train, and an elegant grape sash beneath the bust.

And earlier, while on the hunt for bridesmaid dresses that would flatter a variety of body types, my sister and I found the perfect formal and flattering grape gown, which featured white embroidery and crystal detailing on its sash.

 An Alfred Angelo Wedding
Of course, I was excited about these picks before the big day, but looking back at our photos afterward, I’m even more in love. In the end, I’m so glad I ordered my dream dress before it was too late, and that the girls also loved their dresses, which paired so perfectly with mine. I truly can’t imagine our wearing anything else.

Will you and your bridesmaids wear dresses made by the same designer, or closely matched in style? Whether you’re now looking back on your day or are still waiting for it to arrive, have you ever had any second thoughts about your dress choices?

This is an image of the dress I originally wanted my bridesmaids to wear (and in this color, too):

Isn’t the back adorable?  It’s a Dessy (After Six) dress (from their web site).

When I took my six bridesmaids with me to a shop to try it on, I was so excited to see them all fall in love with it.  Perfect for our spring April wedding and to match our turquoise/aqua color.  Unfortunately, they all HATED it!  I mean, not just, “Uh, we’re not thrilled about it.”  But rather, it is totally unflattering…the bust is horrible…I hate the color…please don’t make us wear this, hated it!

I was so bummed.  But I wasn’t going to let the attire issue come between me and my girlfriends and relatives.  Then they started going on about how they didn’t like the blue colored dress and wanted to go with red instead (the other color of our wedding).  They said they would more likely wear red again and it would be flattering on all skin tones.  I was really bummed out about this because the blue was what I wanted to go with my color scheme!  The red was only the accent color.  So I asked them to show me some options of what they liked.  They came up with two choices:

If you read my dress post, you know that I found my “perfect dress” rather quickly. In fact, I donned the winner at the first salon I visited, within the first hour of being there.

I also mentioned in that post that I was accompanied by my 15-year-old future stepdaughter and maid of honor, who was also shopping for a dress. What I didn’t mention (until now) was that finding HER dress was not nearly so easy!

I suppose it didn’t occur to me that agreeing on her dress would be such a big deal. I’ve always known her to be a people-pleaser (overly so), and I knew she was excited about a wedding on the beach, and happy that she would get to wear a “fun” orange dress. Plus, she had told me two days earlier, “It’s your wedding – I’ll wear whatever you want me to wear!” Yeah, right.

So, while I tried on wedding gowns, she tried on bridesmaid dresses. And I very quickly realized I had a challenge on my hands — a challenge rooted in several facts:

1) Her definition of “fun” was not exactly my definition of “beach-appropriate.” She tended toward the sassy, satin party dresses with bubble skirts and pick-ups. I wanted something soft and flowy, preferably in chiffon.

2) I’m very sensitive to quality in fabric and fabrication. Honestly, it kills me that so many bridesmaid dresses priced at $200+ are made of cheap-looking polyester, with bunched seams and sloppy finishing. I ruled out entire lines for that.

3) Orange is not an easy color to find. I wanted a true, bright, tropical orange – not creamy tangerine, or coral or pumpkin or tomato. Not so easy to come by, apparently.

4) She’s 15 going on 35. Every dress she picked out was slim and slinky, whereas I preferred a more demure A-line or full skirt. She “hated” those.

5) She’s the only one wearing a bridesmaid dress. (The rest of my bridal party consists of young girls, who will wear print sundresses.) So she didn’t have to consider the feelings of any other bridesmaids — giving her (almost) total power!

Needless to say, she must have tried on at least 20 dresses at three different stores over a five-day period while visiting from another state. We visited one last store just hours before she was flying home, and struck out again.

That’s when I said, oh-so-sweetly, ”There was one dress you tried on at Alfred Angelo’s that was my absolute favorite, and I would really, really appreciate it if you would wear that dress.” Well, she had tried on so many dresses, she didn’t even remember it. And by now, she was tired of looking, too. Plus, I’m not certain, but her dad may have had a “gentle” conversation with her about being more agreeable. So she agreed to go back and try it on again.

Only this time, when she tried it on, I pointed out one small detail. And suddenly, she said, “Oh, pockets! That makes it HIP!” She proceeded to prance around the store, hands in pockets, looking at herself in the mirror. Whew!!

I’m thrilled that it worked out for both of us, as this was the one and only dress that I absolutely LOVED. It’s the perfect orange, and it’s silk dupioni, which matches the fabric of my dress, too. And here it is, from the “Purely Alfred Angelo” line… isn’t it adorable?

Born to be Mrs. Beever

One thing we knew for sure was that there would be lots of kids at our wedding.  Out of a guest list of about 190 people in attendance, at least 15 to 20 of those were kids ranging from 6 months to 16 years in age.

Now everyone knows how hard it is to keep kids entertained at a wedding, at least during the ceremony portion.  So I had lots of ideas to keep them busy and active.  And it had to start with our four ring bearers (3 of which were Mr Fix It’s nephews and 1 was my nephew) and our flower girl (my little cousin).

As the wedding day quickly approaches, I find myself shopping for one last special gift for each of my bridesmaids. I’ve already picked up a few things over the past couple of months that I thought each bridesmaid would like, but I’m still looking for a little something extra that shows just how much I appreciate all their time and hard work. So as I perused the internet last night looking for a gift that was worthy, I came across these adorable edible creations by Weddingish. Not only would they be a great way to say thanks to your maids, but if you’re just starting out in the planning process and have yet to find a creative way to ask your bridesmaids, this would be the perfect way to say “will you?”. The cookies come in all different designs and can be ordered through dozens of different companies with a simple google search. Even better news is, for less than $10 each, they’re affordable on any budget! Here were some of my favorite picks:

Another great idea is to give a personalized cookie to a bride-to-be! They’re perfect for a congratulations to a newly engaged friend, or even as a tasty treat to give at a bachelorette party. I thought these were so cute since they come with a little crown pin!

Who doesn’t love a delicious sugar cookie, especially one that was made just for them? You could even DIY these cookies if you’re the baking type! No matter what, your girlfriends are going to swoon over a gift like this… and if you’re lucky, they might even share!

Proving that it’s possible to merge rustic charm with elegance and tradition, Mary and Ben’s August wedding reception was held at the Diamond B, a 200-acre ranch in Kalispell, Montana.  The newlyweds took advantage of their setting in the “great wide open,” posing with their bridal party on a John Deere truck, and below a silo.

I’ve been a bridesmaid in quite a few weddings over the years. Starting in the 1980′s, the fashion of these wedding parties became reminiscent of the famous scene from “27 Dresses” (although, admittedly, some of those dresses were MUCH more wearable than others).

So, when I got engaged and picked my bridal attendants, I wanted to spare them the torture that is unfashionable bridesmaid attire. But since we do live in real life and not a movie, some unavoidable factors came into play, like the fact that I have three bridesmaids with completely different body types, two of whom are larger girls.

The good news: I knew I would be picking black, floor-length dresses

The bad news: The sample size at most dress shops is a size 8

In a recent post, I showed the dress that I loved. As a reminder, here it is:

B3042 210x300 Bridesmaid dressing 101

My girls didn’t share my enthusiasm, mostly because, being sizes 14 and 16 respectively, they didn’t even want to try the sample size on. And,unfortunately, the only way to try on a dress in your exact size is to order (and pay for) the dress, get measurements taken, wait for it to arrive and pray that it will fit you like you imagine it will.

This put me in an uncomfortable situation. I want my bridesmaids to be happy and I want them to feel beautiful in what they wear on the day of my wedding and wear the dress again long after my wedding day has passed. All of the bridesmaids dresses that I wore in years past have been collecting dust in my closet because I rationalized that I could “find some use for them someday”. That day never came. So with all of my own bridesmaid experience fresh in my mind, I resolved to give my bridesmaids a say in their dress.

This brings me to this past week. I told the girls I would give them until September 1st to find a dress that they liked better. The only stipulations were that I had to see it first, it had to be black, and it had to be floor length. I myself decided to go to a bridal store in Bronxville and asked the girls if they were interested in coming. After trying on every black floor-length gown available in the store, we found one we loved. Here it is:

 Bridesmaid dressing 101

Both dresses have their pros and cons. The first dress will probably be a little more flattering to every figure and it is less expensive (although the girls have told me they don’t care about the price of the dress). The second dress is their pick, though. I want the girls to have their measurements taken by the beginning of September and so, need to have a dress picked. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Sometimes (a lot actually, if you are wedding planning) life throws you little curves that change the way certain projects turn out or how they are completed. My flower girl dress is a shining example of that.

In the beginning, I had a hard time deciding exactly what I wanted for my little princess. When it all finally fell into place I was so thrilled I blogged about it. I just knew it would all be great and one less thing to worry about. My mom-in-law was going to do all the sewing. I had found vintage Irish lace I loved. It was in the bag!

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. My friend embroiders the gorgeous little green sash for the waist of the dress and sends it to me. It is perfect! I give it to my mom-in-law to take home and finish the dress. Or so I thought. My usually very organized and dependable mom-in-law then LOSES the sash on the way home, most likely at a stop off by McDonalds. Did I mention that my embroidery friend is moving to Texas? Ummm, yeah. So I am trying to find out if I can get another sash made and embroidered in time, then last weekend my poor, precious mom-in-law falls and literally shatters her shoulder! She has to have the whole thing replaced and now has no feeling in her hand. We were all so scared and worried, but I feel really horrible and icky because I can’t quit thinking about my flower girl dress! Do I say something? Do I just slink out and buy something even though I have money in this one already? Is it poor taste to get all the stuff from her and do it myself?

Last week, we went over to visit her. She is starting to be able to curl her fingers on her own now which is amazing. We had a great little visit. Then, she starts talking about how there are so many things she wishes she would have done earlier in the summer and that she is kicking herself now because she never puts things off like she has this year. It is very true. This woman never asks for anything, never wants recognition, but is ALWAYS working on something for someone. I tried to comfort her and let her know that it is just her turn to be assisted. Then, I make a nervous segway…
“Speaking of stuff to do… why don’t I just take over Ellie’s dress?”

She looked so sorry that I could have crawled under my chair. All she said was that it would be a big help and she appologized. She told me where the stuff was.

When I got home, I realized why she had looked so sorry and why she had said what she had said. The only thing she had done for the dress was to do that front sash piece that she had eventually lost. I just took a deep breath, called a friend to help me bang it out and we got to work. It turns out that it worked for the best. Once I got into the actual creation process I found out that there were several things about the pattern that needed to be changed. I added a full lining, finished the arms and neck differently, decided to insert the lace rather than pintuck pleat to hold it in, etc. I also realized that the embroidered sash would have been WAY too big and would have covered up the majority of that vintage Irish lace I love so much!  I had stressed and felt bad for absolutely no reason at all. All I can say is, “Thank you, Jesus!!”

And because I am sure you are all wondering… here is a sneak peek:

Hello again, ya’ll! I feel like I have been gone forever, but I really needed that vacation to sunnier shores that kept me away. I have been back to reality for about a week now. Still, the busy-ness of getting back into the swing of things has not allowed me to get to my favorite things… like blogging here!  There is tons to catch up on!

A few days ago I met with my girlfriend that is creating the jewelry for my BM’s, my Jr. BM (oldest daughter) and my Flowergirl (youngest daughter). She works three jobs, so she hasn’t had a chance to really get into getting things done and with time running so short she grabbed me and two of her jewelry making friends and we all got to work.  I am just thrilled that I got to be involved because it is something I have never tried and I am Mrs. CraftyBritches.
Yes, I was super excited to try out a new thing. The ladies I worked with were wonderful and supportive… but I think it has been proven that there are somethings that a person is just not great at. I can not, for the life of me, tie in a clasp or properly work a crimper. I take years to decide on a pattern and then I second guess myself thirty times. The two older ladies there had to have the patience of Job to deal with me. But I had brought us all dinner and snacks, so they couldn’t have hated me too bad.  In any case, we laughed a lot… cussed a little… and accomplished more than I thought was possible!
We finished both of my daughters’ sets, finalized the BMs’ designs and got a lot done there too!

I am so looking foward to getting all the finished products in hand! I can’t wait to share them on here! This is one DIY project that I really didn’t skimp on price with. Thank the Lord that my friend is doing these at no cost, because the pearls, Swarovski crystals and all the copper findings where quite expensive. I don’t mind though, because my girls are worth every penny. ( And I may borrow my sis in law’s set on occasion. LOL)
