Hello Blogger Brides and Brides!
I’m so sorry for the hiatus in blogging, life has been Topsy Turvy and Upsy Downsy (My last name is Downs, get it?)
But I have been going bookmark crazy with wedding ideas and inspiration lately. So where am I with the wedding right now?
- We just got our engagement pictures done a few weeks ago and we are anxiously awaiting a DVD of them, so we can show them off.
- We haven’t set a date yet (eeek), but we’re thinking 2012 for sure. This summer will be jam-packed with venue road trips and scouting, so we can finally set a date.
- I have decided to make a lot of things myself for the wedding, like invitations, place cards, favours and menu signs. Does it sound overwhelming? Yes. Do I know what I am getting into? Probably not. I’ll be posting my projects as I make them.
- We are deciding on a crazy, adventurous place for our ceremony. Details to follow…
- We’ve decided we don’t want a cake. Is that crazy? Do people absolutley expect a cake at a wedding? Will we be frowned upon by our guests? I am sorry to all of my guests, but I just don’t like cake! I much prefer cookies, fruit, chocolate, cheesecake, and anything else besides dry tasting cake. So, I am looking at alternative dessert options.
If you were a guest would you be alright with cupcakes and candy as a dessert?
What if they looked like this:
Or this?

Welcome back! I think the cupcake/candy idea is really fun, and can’t wait to see your engagement pictures!
We’re not doing a traditional wedding cake. Thus, we’re not going to cut a cake either. My fiancé and I have very different tastes in desserts, so we’d both be disappointed if we had to share the same dessert.
We will be having cake though. They will be individually-sized and served as the dessert course. Even though I’m not usually a cake person, our caterer’s baker made the most moist and delicious carrot cake I’ve ever tasted, it was by far the best of the several dessert options we sampled. The fiancé opted for chocolate lava cake (which I thought was nasty, but to each his own).
As long as you’re providing some sort of sweets for your guests, they won’t be disappointed.
We aren’t either. We will have a cake on the bottom to cut into and then a cupcake tower. I think that if you aren’t a cake person that it’s totally fine to break tradition as long as you serve your guests ***something*** sweet!
I love the candy car idea!
Thanks everyone!
I wasn’t sure if a cake was something everyone expected at the wedding. I guess the only thing we would be missing with a cake would be a picture of us cutting the cake, but I’m sure we can think of some other dessert picture ideas!
I’m glad you like the pink and navy dessert table I designed. You could always have a picture of you two intertwining arms (like you do with champagne flutes) and feeding each other a nibble of two beautiful cupcakes or other little sweet tidbit.
Congrats on your engagement!
Thanks Shauna!!
Your blog is a cupcake and candy lover’s paradise and I absolutley love reading it!
My advice: Don’t do anything just because it’s expected! I don’t like cake either, and in my book, cupcakes are just small cakes so they’re out, too. (Thought they ARE very cute and I love the many creative display options!)
Instead, I’ve decided to serve pie for dessert. Our wedding will be on the beach in the Florida Keys, and the colors are orange and green. I want guests to get a real feel for the Keys, so I’ve decided to serve traditional key lime pie, and an orange variation: mango key lime pie. The local grocery store has a top-notch bakery that makes the BEST key lime pie around, and it works out to $1 a slice. We’ll dress it up with fresh mango and lime slices, and whipped cream. I don’t expect anyone will be disappointed!
