Signing Wedding Contracts

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 03, 2009
MWHALEN84

So, there is still <19 months till my wedding, and so far I have booked my reception venue, my church, my wedding planner, my band, and now I am looking at photographers. I've compared 4 different companies, (2 of which came from Donnie Brown's preferred vendors list). I have found one that I like, and they fall within our budget; kind of. I think we've decided we don't want a professional videographer, so if we combine the allocated amounts for photography and videography together than they are with in the budget!

I think I've decided on one of Donnie's vendors, http://www.ninephotography.com/. Their photos are pretty amazing, and they seem so nice, and really willing to work with you to help you stay with in budget. Plus if Donnie recommends them, I'm sure they are amazing!

But, is it weird to be spending thousands of dollars to reserve all of these vendors so early in the game?

I'm already getting nervous that I might change my mind about my "theme", which my band (Frank Sinatra Tribute Band) and my reception venue (has the look of a 1940's supper club) complement so well!

I guess I have cold feet towards my vendors; what if I find someone better later? what if I wait, and then I can't have them anymore? What is the appropriate amount of time to spend looking for vendors before you know you have the best quality vendor at the best price?

Who is your Frank Sinatra tribute band? I think the earlier you plan, the better. Getting things done last minute is incredibly stressful. As far as finding better vendors later...if you are already locked in to a vendor--help them achieve what you want. Give them direction!

Before you say no to a videographer, check out my recent post regarding this subject:

Also, as far as booking vendors...in my case, I did a ton of online research through blogs and web sites. Then I contacted a few companies via e-mail to see if they were available and within my budget. Then I narrowed it down to about 4 to 5 vendors within each category (Photog, video, DJ, coordinator, etc). I met with at least 4 to 5 because I wanted to make sure I was doing due diligence and getting a great deal for the quality and style I wanted. Once I knew which vendors I wanted (which was fairly obvious once I met with 4-5 of them), I would book them immediately. I had almost all of my vendors booked over a year before our wedding. My florist was booked about 11 months before my wedding. I encourage this if you feel confident and are able to because you can lock in their rates now (they will typically increase rates yearly). In addition, you can negotiate better rates while the economy is still in somewhat of a recession...what if things are booming a year from now when you want to start booking? And of course you are guaranteeing they won't already be booked.

If there is something you're unsure of or doubting, like whether or not you're going to want to change the vibe of your event and need a DJ instead of a band, then don't book that yet. But otherwise, I think you should be fine.

Well, I started researching vendors right after I got engaged in April, and then reserved our church, reception venue, photographer, videographer, DJ, month-of wedding planner, florist and baker when I was out in California this summer, about a year before my wedding in June 2010. However, if not for my long-distance situation, I probably could have waited even a little longer to book certain vendors like the florist and baker.

If you’re afraid you might change your theme or that you might change your mind about wanting to work with certain vendors, I’d say keep researching, but wait a while longer to book. However, keep in mind that certain types of vendors, especially photographers and videographers (if you decide to have one), might be snapped up early if they’re really top-notch, so I would definitely try to start booking the rest of your vendors no later than a year ahead of time.

And your theme sounds great, by the way! :)

Bio:

I can't wait to get married! 6-4-2011

Scott and I have been together for almost 6 years (April 2010). We met our freshman year of college at The University of Texas at Austin and had every single class together until we graduated! We moved to Baltimore 2.5 years ago so that Scott could attend Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. We planned our wedding date to be 1 week after he graduates from Med School! :)

I currently work >60 hours/ week as a research tech in Oncology at Johns Hopkins. I also babysit on the weekends and love to play with my yorkie, Stewie! In my spare time (haha) I read everything I can about weddings!
