Gifts for Groomsmen of the Tech Geek Variety

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 08, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG
J's groomsmen aren't exactly your typical beer guzzling groomsmen. In fact, two of them are Eagle Scouts, and each and every one of them is (and I say this with love) a geek. While I'm relieved that these fine gentlemen aren't the type to show up at the ceremony with a wicked hangover, their nerdy dispositions make the task of finding the boys appropriate groomsmen gifts a little more challenging. The typical engraved flask just wouldn't fit their personalities, and I've always thought that knives, though practical, are peculiar gifts for the day of a wedding.

Ideally, I'd like to assemble a little gift box for J's best boys. Why blow the entire gift budget on one lame, albeit shiny, gift when you can shower them with a number of practical presents?

My fiance, Jason, is always losing his beloved thumb drive. Thankfully, Pexagon has a solution to the common problem of tech geek absentmindedness! This fully customizable 512 MB thumb drive is available for a little over $10.00, and it's cute to boot!

After replacing his thumb drive, J complained of suffering from another nerdy dilemma. He would often think of topics to research on Wikipedia during his work day, but he would forget the subjects by the time he gained access to a computer. That's when I bought him a trusty Moleskin notebook. This nerd essential was used by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and writers like Ernest Hemingway. Now, the boy doesn't leave home without his trusty Moleskin. Think Geek currently offers three mini notebooks for only of $6.99.

Last, but not least, we have my personal favorite. I can't get enough of these adorable typewriter cufflinks by qacreate on Etsy. They're currently selling for $20.00 a pair or $99.00 for a set of five. They're just so charming, and match the vintage typewriter we'll be using for our guestbook.

Engagement Photos By Wreckless Photography

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG

Even though the wedding is still two years away, we decided to celebrate our engagement by having our engagement pictures taken by a photographer whose work we'd been admiring for some time.

I was led to Kristy's website by a former co-worker, who said that her work was absolutely amazing.  He wasn't lying.  Kristy not only takes the most breathtaking, fun photos, but she's such a joy to work with!  Our photography session felt like a mellow afternoon with a friend.

We're set to get our photo cd this week, but I thought I'd share some of Kristy's picks while we wait...

Popping The Question To Your Bridesmaids

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG
I'm a firm believer in the kind and just treatment of wedding attendants. After all, your attendants are supposed to be your most beloved friends and family members, and they should be treated accordingly. Unfortunately, many brides abuse their female attendants by dressing them in unattractive, poufy dresses or using them as whipping boys as the big day draws near. Not okay, ladies. Not okay.

A wedding, and the events surrounding the wedding, are supposed to be fun for all involved, so why not make every task a celebration? I've noticed a lovely and gracious trend developing in several different wedding communities. Some brides have taken to respecfully extending formal invitations to their desired attendants. I think this practice is not only polite, but so much fun! Here a a few of my favorite bridesmaid invitations:

This strawberry and orange, 1950s-inspired card by Etsy vendor pepperinapress is just too cute! What a perfect way to show your bridesmaids that they're in for a fun adventure! These lovely cards are currently listed for $3.50, but the rate can be adjusted depending on how many you order.

If you're planning a classic, formal affair, these stamped and dusted tags by Etsy vendor AlmondWorks might be appropriate, and at $2.50 each, they are easy on the wallet as well as the eyes.

While I'm not usually partial to pink and red roses, this adorable card, by Etsy vendor RetrospectiveDesign is just too cute! They're available for maid-of-honors and matron-of-honors, as well, and are $7.00 for a set of four.

And since you're already buying cute bridesmaid-related paper goods, why stop at just the proposal? Another Etsy vendor, davidcoty, has the cutest dress fitting reminder available in his online shop. Check out this vendor's bachelorette party invitations, too! How adorable and thoughtful are these little cards?

My Grandparents' Wedding

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG

A few months ago, I got a little package from my maternal grandmother with a little photograph and an article from her wedding in August of 1955.

The wedding announcement from the newspaper is beautifully written. Such amazing detail.

"The bride was escorted to the altar by her brother, Thomas Riddering of Marne. She chose a waltz-length gown of antique taffeta and lace styled with a fitted bodice, scoop neckline and bouffant skirt. Her shoulder-length veil of French illusion fell from a calot of matching antique taffeta and lace. She carried a spray of white carnations..."

"...Miss Rita Riddering, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. She was attired in a ballerina-length gown of blue crystallet fashioned with a long torso, portrait neckline and short sleeves. A short fold of crystallet finished the bodice and tied in a bow at the back. Her bouquet was of pink and white carnations."

The Dress Hath Been Found!

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG

"The Dress" Has Been Found!

Whoops! I've been so busy as of late that I haven't updated as frequently as planned! However, I have been involved in a mad, wedding-planning frenzy, so I think my absence is somewhat excusable.

I've had an exciting couple of months. My mother and I found (and purchased) the dress on a whim while I was visiting my parents in Vacaville! We walked into this newly-opened boutique, DownTown Gowns and were greeted by Leanne, the boutique owner. She wasn't judgemental of my wedding date (which is still a good two years away) and immediately suggested I try on the knee-length Casablanca gown that had caught my eye as soon as I entered the room.

After trying it on and falling in love, my mother and I left the boutique to rally the troops. We returned three hours later with my mother's two best friends, one of their daughters, my sister, and Lily, my maid-of-honor, in tow. I tried on a variety of dresses, but my heart was set on the first dress I tried on. The next day, my mother and I returned to the boutique and ordered the lovely little dress.

I've had to defend my choice of dress a couple of times already. Some people are just so confused by the concept of a short dress! Personally, I've never been one for full-length gowns. I tried some on at the boutique, but I felt absolutely ridiculous dragging around a big heavy dress. I kept stumbling and tripping and felt anchored to the floor and all around uncomfortable. I've always lusted after shorter wedding dresses because on our wedding day, I want to be able to move and jump and dance to my heart's desire.

While I have pictures of myself in the gown, I'm going to refrain from posting them on this blog out of fear that the fiance will stumble upon the photographs. He's allowed to see the dress, he just can't see me in the dress until the day of the wedding.

I'm so excited!

Robot Cake Topper by Buildersstudio

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not really a fan of cake toppers. I think that in 9/10 instances, they're pretty tacky. However, I've kind of fallen hard for these metallic robot-inspired cake toppers on Etsy.

They're the very definition of geek chic! Classic, yet quirky! They remind me so much of the movie "Return To Oz," a favorite film of ours. The fiance let out a squeal of delight and awe when I showed him this lovely Etsy find.

Buildersstudio offers these adorable cake toppers in a variety of styles. They average at about $150 and are made of lightweight wood, so they're light enough to fit on any wedding cake. Whether I buy one or not, these will always be one of my Etsy favorites!

DIY Save The Dates

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG

Since the wedding is still a full two years away, it's too soon to finalize (or even research) some of the wedding arrangements. However, we plan to send out the save-the-dates in a matter of months, so I giddily got started on planning our DIY save-the-dates.

In order to complete this project, I needed image composition software. Thanks to the folks at GIMP, I was able to download their wonderful program for free. It took a little messing around, but after a few hours and a couple downloaded vector images and fonts, I came up with this:

Pretty, eh? We might still tweak the colors a bit, and we still have to circle the wedding date on the mini-calendar and affix one of our favorite engagement pictures to the backside, but then they'll be ready for the printers and will be sent off to our family and friends. Needless to say, making these on our own has saved us a little money and has made the whole process a little more personal.

What about you, faithful Bride In A Blog readers? What do you have planned for your save-the-dates?

The Best Birdcage Veils

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG
One trend that I just can't get enough of us the fashionable and versatile birdcage veil. I had the pleasure of trying one on while I tried on different dresses, and I fell in love with these bold, fun accessories. Birdcage veils, also known as face veils, can be worn in many different ways, and can range from funky fashion statements to sophisticated, classic blushers. Here are some of our favorite styles:

The Marilyn veil from Something Bold Veils is simple, elegant, and classic. The 9-inch blusher covers some of the hair and most of the face, and is affixed using a haircomb. The simple nature of the veil makes it easy to customize using additional accessories, such as brooches and flowers. This veil is an affordable $36.00, but for a few dollars more, you can purchase the veil with crystal or pearl embellishments.

This Foulard Bandeau veil from Unveiled Bridal Designs really demonstrates the versatility of this type of veil. The headband style really gives the whole ensemble a 1920's feel that's perfect for weddings inspired by old Hollywood or The Great Gatsby. Absolutely gorgeous. You can rush order this stunning veil for $152.90, but if you have time you spare, you can customize it to your heart's content.

I absolutely adore this chic, $110.00 birdcage veil from Arkital. The pouf and the pearl brooch accents really make it stand out from the crowd without being too over-the-top.

Gowns by Stephanie James Couture

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008
BRIDEINABLOG

Who says a lady has to stop admiring other gowns after she's purchased her wedding dress?

Not I, said The Bride.

I've always been a huge fan of Stephanie James' work. Unfortunately, she currently doesn't have any vendors within 500 miles of my little Oregon village, so I was forced to get creative and eventually opted for another gown. However, I'm still constantly checking her blog for updates. I've spoken to Stephanie herself via email, and she is a fabulous, friendly lady that goes out of her way to help her customers create their dream dresses.

Stephanie James is one of the few vendors that carries a wide variety of tea-length styles. Here are a few of my favorites...

I can vividly remember the first time I set eyes on The Josephine! I was flipping through Modern Bride magazine, and I fell hard. Classic, with a distinctly creative twist. According to Stephanie James' blog, this style is now available with a wide variety of different accent colors.

Oh my! The Daphne is just so very charming! I just can't get over that adorable flower detailing on the bodice. Delightfully simple, yet flirty!

Ah, The Greta! I absolutely love the clean lines of this dress. If only I were the retro Vegas wedding type. This dress would look simply fabulous on a sassy, bold bride. I can just imagine it paired with some brightly colored pumps and some bold accessories. It's just too cute!
