Undercover Wedding Cake

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

Being in SoCal we do outdoor weddings all year long and I have brides ask all the time how they can protect the cake from those little bugs that are outside sharing your space for the day. I've never really had a good solution, we just had to cope!

This is probably the most romantic backdrop for an outdoor wedding cake I have seen lately with a perfect solution in protecting the cake until revealed for the ceremonial cake cutting.

Orange you Inspired To Plan Your Wedding

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 07, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

Sometimes there is a color that brings on the creative flow. Orange is a great fall color with huge potential. I have recently worked with a wonderful couple who’s details inspired me to do a cake that I have to admit is one of my fav’s this year.  It was a huge reminder to me why I love to do weddings.

She came in with an invitation that was neutral in tones but with a poppy outlined in orange for the color of flowers. She also wanted to add some very dark grey to accent the cake. This was to work in the linen color chosen for the evening.

Her venue was the SLS hotel in Beverly Hills which is very sleek and modern.

We decided to have trickling flowers with dark centers, 3 large Poppies in a dark orange, and accent with dots at the top edge of the white fondant cakes.

I went to the internet for images that inspired me (below) to create the perfect mixture of a modern flair with this great flower

Orange is a great pop color this year for fall weddings, but whatever your color choice is, be inspired!

Wedding Destination Inspiration

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

I love the destination wedding and the wonderful themes it can bring with it to your special day. So many couples are taking their nearest and dearest to some great little getaways to say their "I do's" .

Wedding cakes are a fun way to show your personality, and include your destination inspiration!

This one is simply perfect for a Napa Valley Vineyard.

Love this idea for a Ranch Wedding.

All I can say is "Vegas Baby".

What could be more romantic then a wedding in Paris.

Sweet Little Seating Cards for your Wedding Reception

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

I just love this wedding website. I scan it cover to cover for new and fresh ideas and for inspiration. Get Married.com is a wonderful resource for everything you might need as a Bride. There are many varied opinions and great ideas. The experts gathered here are the best in the business, and are available through the comment section for all your questions and concerns. Feel free to utilize us! We are here for you!

Floral sites, craft and DIY sites are also great for inspiration. I live on Google images. It’s a great resource for different angles and views of something I might be designing.

I found this little beauty, and thought it was just too cute not to pass on to you. And I just added it to my mental file folder for the future.

I think cupcakes are just the thing for seating place cards! I had never seen this done before and I love the idea. I think the possibilities are endless, and totally edible to boot!  Monograms, Initials, small symbols of the Bride and Grooms interests, would be fun. A little grassy patch, with small wildflowers and a wooden sign! Doesn’t that sound cute? We could go on and on, but I’ll bet you have already thought of one yourself!

Share your ideas with us, and lets brainstorm together!

Wedding Cake Disasters

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

Planning a wedding takes energy, emotions, time, and money. You expect everything to go perfectly, and you have done all that you can to make sure it’s the perfect event!

I am not the pessimist but generally, something is not going to turn out the way you expected. The universe throws you a curve and the flowers may not come in as you ordered and the florist uses roses instead of peonies, the seating chart gets lost and you have seated Uncle Joe next to Aunt Grace and they despise each other.

Usually your guests are not going to notice these little minor problems, but when the cake shows up like this……..

(Please note this is not my cake)

wedding cake

How are we going to hide that!

Here are just a few tips that I would suggest when ordering your cake to avoid mishaps such as this

  1. Pay the delivery fee! do not let your friend pick it up to save a couple of bucks.
  2. Make sure the bakery has a  qualified decorator delivering, to do repairs on sight if needed.
  3. Do not have the bakery deliver too early. (especially if its warm that day)

And my best advice to all brides is to remember this is going to be the happiest day of your life, learn to laugh together.

Crazy Colored Cakes for Summer

THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

I'm just having so much fun this year with all the great summer colors for cakes. All my orders lately have been filled with stripes, dots, and petite little flowers.

Leslie Maynor Cake One

Cakes like this are fun and playful, just like the warm summer day
of a backyard wedding at this time of year.

You can keep them whimsical, or go traditional but the color is what will make the impact!

Kendra and Hank's Wedding!

THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  Being a Cake Designer and Decorator is fun!  Sure, it’s still a job and still work, but what a great way to make a living. I get to meet people that are madly in love and just starting their lives together. Making a Bride’s dream wedding cake is just a joy, and I get to share that everyday!
This month I was able to play a small part in the dream wedding of Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett at the Playboy Mansion.

(courtesy of US Weekly)

There are venues and then there are venues! The Playboy mansion was such a beautiful place for a wedding. The staff was a real pleasure to work with and could not have been more gracious to us. A really fun group of people too! We spent the day there and made many friends. It’s obvious that they love their jobs too.
We spoke with the Groom just after the ceremony about the Transformer cake we made him as his Groom’s cake, and he loved it being a huge Transformer fan.  We were also able to speak with some of the Bridesmaids and it was fun to share in their excitement.
As the “Kendra” show progresses on the E! Channel this season you will be able to see more of this event than I could ever share with you.

Showing Off (just a little)

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 03, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

Do you know how to tell if it’s June? Look for the dark circles under the eyes of your favorite Decorator!
This is always a very busy time for us, as it is for all involved in the Wedding business. Even with the economic slowdown, we are crazy busy. Plus, we are under deadline to open our South Pasadena, CA bakery.
Having said that, we still try to find the time to have a little fun when we can. This week we were asked to supply wedding cake samples to the guests of the World Premiere of the new Sandra Bullock movie “The Proposal”. The Red Carpet premiere was held at the El Capitan theatre on Hollywood Blvd, and the after party was held across the street at the famous Roosevelt Hotel. Being a wedding themed movie (sort of) we justified to ourselves that this night out was work related (sort of).
We had fun. We served eight different flavors of cake, to about 200 guests.  They were very gracious, and complimentary about the cake, which makes one feel very good. Especially coming from some of the biggest names in Hollywood. All the stars from the movie were there, as were the studio Exec’s. In fact, the Chairman of Disney Studios is a fan of our Red Velvet.  You have to have good taste at Disney!
My fiancé and I are big fans of the Bachelor/Bachelorette series on TV, and we were lucky enough to meet the current Bachelorette, Jillian Harris at this function.  What a wonderful, sweet and lovely person she is! She was kind enough to take a picture with Earl.  He wasn’t the same the rest of the evening.

Centerpiece Cakes

WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2009
LESLIE MAYNOR

Some days you just get an idea that you want to share. I was trying to come up with a clever cake idea for a client that wanted something different for her Bridal Shower. She was on a tight budget but wanted something spectacular to look at until served for dessert.

Centerpiece cakes are the answer!  Not just any normal tiered cake but each cake to represent a vase of flowers. She can use some of her floral budget towards the cake because she no longer will need table centerpieces. Each cake will serve the guests at that particular table; every table will have a designated guest to be the cake cutter.

This is a great showcase for edible art at its best! Below are just a couple of pics to inspire.

The cake above was designed and created by Jennifer Robinson
