Expert Advice: Platinum Wedding Jewelry

Add to Favorite

When looking for your wedding jewelry, consider platinum!

Platinum is the most durable metal there is.  When it comes to your wedding day jewelry, platinum will stand the test of time so your rings don't lose their luster.  We spoke with New York-based jewelry and style expert Michael O'Connor about the benefits of this rare and precious metal.

GM: What is the best metal for wedding jewelry?

MO: Platinum is really considered the best metal for wedding jewelry because platinum has an immense amount of durability. That means that when a couple gets an engagement ring or a wedding band, their patterns won’t wear down, the beautiful engravings they put on the inside won’t wear down, and most importantly, when you’re investing in a diamond, it will hold the diamond more securely forever.

GM: Are platinum engagement rings affordable?

MO:  There is pretty much a platinum engagement ring or wedding band for every price point. Wedding bands can be as little as $325 and go up from there. To get a real high quality engagement ring you have to take the center diamonds into consideration. One thing guys don’t want to forget though, when they’re buying a diamond engagement ring, don’t spend all the money on the diamond. The setting is as important as the diamond that it’s holding, because that’s really what’s holding it securely.

GM: What are the trends right now for wedding bands?

MO: The most popular styles for ladies' wedding bands really range from very classic, high polished bands that just fit very nicely up against an engagement ring to make a simple statement, to bands that are a little more ornate in feel. Maybe something with a little more engraving on it, or something that’s wrapped around the engagement ring in a specific way, or even something that has diamonds all around it. For men the most popular styles are the classics -- a subtle design, probably not with too many diamonds, but maybe a beautiful rope pattern set into the band on either side.

GM: Will platinum clash with anyone’s wedding attire?

MO: The great thing about platinum is the fact that when you’ve got a naturally white metal like platinum, it’s going to go with everything. That’s why celebrities choose platinum for red carpet events, because no matter what color the gown, platinum is going to go well with it.

GM: How can we make our wedding rings unique?

MO: I think one of the nicest things couples do today are beautiful engravings on the wedding band.  I think that’s a wonderful way for the couple to share a very special memory that’s not necessarily shared with everyone else, and that could be a pet phrase, a pet name. It could be the date of the engagement, or simply the date of the wedding.
